Wayne D. Palmer
Wayne Palmer is an accomplished litigator and business lawyer, having represented Kell, Alterman & Runstein clients in the areas of business disputes, domestic relations, employment matters, commercial collection, and maritime claims since 1981. But while litigation is where he earned his reputation—he tried 50 jury cases in the Multnomah County District Attorney's office before becoming an official lawyer—it's mediation that takes up much of his time these days.
"Most clients don't like litigation because it's expensive and draining," he explains. "People don't always realize that at the beginning. Mediation costs less, and it gives clients a chance to present their sides in detail and explain why they were harmed. Not many people find litigation healing."
Wayne joined Kell, Alterman & Runstein after serving as a legal intern for the District Attorney, where he attracted the attention of partner Ted Runstein. In the two-plus decades that followed, he's developed reputation for his detail-oriented approach and receptive attitude, which he employs to find equitable, reasonable solutions to a client's disputes. He's also known for even-handedness and integrity, and his relaxed, friendly manner keeps his business and family clients composed during more difficult contests.
Not surprising for someone who jumped into litigation before even passing the bar, Wayne appreciates the intellectual stimulation that law provides, and is endlessly amused by the things he learns on a daily basis. "For one case, I became an expert on rhubarb," he says. "I could have told you about growing conditions and certain strains. Who would have guessed that?"
In his spare time, Wayne loves to raft down the Colorado River through the Grand Canyon, having taken the 225-mile journey eight times in the past 10 years. He's rafted most of the major rivers in the Western U.S., many with his family, and is a member of Oregon Whitewater Activities.
